PLR vs MRR: Similarities and Key Differences Explained

July 24, 2024

Private Label Rights (PLR)

PLR buyers can modify, rebrand, and sell the product as their own.

Buyers can rebrand the product with their own name and logo.

Buyers can resell the product but cannot pass on resell rights.

Buyers have full control over the pricing of the product.

PLR content can be used for websites, blogs, and more.

Ideal for marketers who want to create unique products quickly.

Master Reseller Rights (MRR)

MRR buyers can resell the product and pass resell rights to their buyers.

Buyers cannot rebrand the product. It should be sold as is.

Buyers can resell the product and pass on the resell rights to their customers.

Buyers have control over the pricing but must adhere to any pricing guidelines set by the original creator.

MRR products are primarily intended for reselling.

Ideal for marketers who want to build a business around reselling products.

Private label rights and master resell rights both allow buyers to resell original content. Their key difference is that MRR product is resold in its original state. PLR buyers cannot pass on resell rights to their own buyers. You can sell the product to others. But the new buyers don't get the license to resell the PLR product. With MRR, buyers pass-on the right to resell the product to succeeding buyers.

Content Marketing Institute found that 60% of digital marketers use PLR to supplement their content creation efforts. Because of this flexibility, MRR is likened to MLM schemes. Digital content resale (including PLR and MRR products) is now valued at $1.2 billion.

Skepticism grow around the whole MRR business. Influencers make bold income claims on TikTok. Some claiming to make $15,000 in 3 days.

This article explains the key difference between PLR and MRR. The dos and don'ts of each are explained. People who successfully made business around these digital products are also highlighted in the article. I'll also compare them with the business model I'm most confident with, local lead generation.

What is PLR?

PLR or Private Label Rights is a license that allows owners to sell (in full or partial) property rights of their original content. A PLR allows the buyer to edit, modify, rebrand, and redistribute the PLR product as their own. The common forms are eBooks and articles. Software, graphics, and videos can also be resold under a PLR license agreement.

Unlike traditional licensing, PLR allows drastic modification of the original content. Changes to the original content can be in the form of text or images. Even the purpose of the content can be changed with a PLR. According to Content Sparks, 68% of digital marketers use PLR for efficient content creation. 54% of marketers use it to enhance their marketing strategies.

What is MRR?

Master Resell Rights or MRR is a license that allows the buyer to resell a product and pass on the resell rights to their customers. MRR products are usually in the form of eBooks, software, videos, and online courses. Compared to PLR, MRR offers more income opportunities since buyers can sell both the product and the resell rights. A digital course is the most popular MRR product. The industry is projected to be worth $374.3 billion by 2026.

PLR and MRR First-Hand Experiences

This Reddit commenter said it's best to repackage the PLR product. He suggests repurposing the PLR content into an ebook or an infoproduct.

This commenter suggests customizing the original product. He said it's best to fit the content with your audience. It's not a lot of work and wouldn't take much time. You simply have to polish the original product and make it yours.

Reddit commenter claims to have made money with the PLR content he bought. He uses them as lead generators for affiliate links. Each PLR product brings 15 to 20 new monthly subscribers.

This guy even likened MRR to an MLM scam. MRR buyers resell the course over and over. They keep 100% of the profit.

This commenter's sister-in-law bought an MRR product for $497. She sold the course for $497 and her buyers and sell it at the same price as well. The thing is, people just care about reselling and making money. They wouldn't even care about finishing the course.

Michelle Spark Makes Money Selling MRR on TikTok

Michelle Spark makes money by reselling MRR products. She sets up sales funnels and uses email marketing to drive leads. Michelle built her following online by branding herself as a coach. She sells a course called Learn and Earn Profits Online (LEPO). Michelle served in the military before venturing to online business. She was also involved in networking in the past. Two of the networking companies she promoted are Mary Kay and Paparazzi Jewelry.

Hannah Alonzo: Is MRR the New Scam on TikTok?

Hannah Alonzo investigates on what she suspects is the new scam on TikTok. She saw many TikTok influencers make income claims about MRR. This woman whom she brought up in her video was one of them. She claims to have made $15,000 in three and a half days. Because of this, she paid off her $22,000 debt in a month. She now claims to make 4 figures a day by selling MRR.

Hannah pointed out that the woman's strategy was to set up new Instagram accounts. She engages with her followers with huge income claims. Hannah explains that influencers who make exaggerated claims are instant red flags.

MRR has a similar business scheme to MLM. It depends on continuous resale. As more people join, the business gets saturated and loses its velocity.

Isabela Lanter Exposes TikTok's Master Resell Rights Scam

Isabella warns about MRR schemes in TikTok. It's been hyped as a side hustle  and a quick money-making opportunity. She says the MRR scheme has a problematic nature. People should avoid it entirely.

One influencer she highlighted is Jasmine. She was previously involved in multi-level marketing. She claims that MRR is an effortless and "lazy" opportunity to make money. Jasmine claims to make thousands by reselling a $500 course. She promotes the course through email and DM automation. She also built a funnel website for catching leads.

My Scam-Free Alternative To PLR and MRR

My scam-free alternative to PLR and MRR is local lead generation. This business builds simple websites for local businesses. The goal is to rank these sites on Google and generate passive leads from them. Master resell rights can be a bit scammy because of people's over-hyped claims. MRR sellers overuse the products to make huge profits. They target vulnerable people looking for an online side hustle.

Local lead generation is better because you don't need to sell products. The business generates leads on autopilot. These leads are sold to local businesses at 85% margins. Owning ranked sites earns long-term passive income. A tree care site I built almost a decade ago still makes $2K monthly passive income today. The business is low-maintenance. A well-maintained website can last over 5 years, according to Orbit Media. MRR and PLR products get saturated and lose their velocity. But with ranked sites, income is stable, consistent, and long-term.
