Rank and rent is setting up websites that you own and selling the leads to local service businesses. AI automation is implementing technological solutions that leverage artificial intelligence to enable businesses to operate more efficiently.

The rank and rent business model has been around since at least the early 2010s while AI automation is a newer, trending business that’s been made possible by recent advancements in artificial intelligence models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude.

I’ve personally been making money with rank and rent for over a decade already, reaching $52K per month in passive income online. I’m an expert in this business model and everything it entails. I’ve even built my own software that tracks all of my rank and rent websites and lead flow.

In the following article, I compare owning rank and rent websites with running an AI automation agency so you can decide which online business model is right for you.

Operational complexity

Rank and rent websites are easy to build

A rank and rent business is relatively easy to operate because you can use a repeatable process and simple tools to rank websites on Google. You don’t need to have technical skills to generate organic leads for home service business owners. You can use no-code, drag-and-drop website builders like Wix and WordPress to build these business websites.

I prefer using my own website builder I created specifically for creating these rank and rent websites. My website builder offers the same design simplicity as any other website builder on the market, but is cheaper and also comes equipped with call tracking phone numbers built directly into the platform for seamless integration with your rank and rent sites. In my community, I also provide my students with readymade templates for building websites fast and well structured for ranking on Google.

Here is one of my students recommending a new student to use my site builder if they are just getting started without experience. My site builder is easier to use, especially when following my proven process for ranking websites on Google that I teach in my course using the site builder.

AI automation implementations are often complex

AI automation requires more advanced business acumen and technical ability to implement the right systems and processes that can positively impact business efficiency. You need an adequate understanding of how a business functions, often spanning multiple departments like marketing, sales, HR, finance, and operations. You also need to be familiar with the common technology stacks that businesses leverage, which varies between different niches. That’s why successful AI automation businesses often focus on one niche to establish a competitive advantage by understanding the business processes and tools intimately and achieve superior outcomes.

For example, large companies typically leverage enterprise CRM tools like Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics 365 while smaller local businesses choose affordable options like Zoho CRM and Monday Sales CRM.

Above all, AI automation requires a strong understanding of automation tools like n8n, Zapier, and Make to actually connect all of a business's systems and tools together. This advanced complexity is why you often see AI automation coaches with technical backgrounds, like Tina Huang of Lonely Octopus who has a Computer Science Master’s and worked as a data scientist at Meta. While it’s not impossible for a beginner to start and scale a successful AI automation agency, there’s a longer learning curve for those that don’t start with a business and technical background.

Competition level

Rank and rent websites often target low-competition markets

The primary strategy with rank and rent websites is to target markets where there is solid demand for a service but relatively low competition on Google. That’s why one of the most time intensive steps when setting up a rank and rent website is performing the research to find the right opportunity. You do this by using tools like Ahrefs and Keywords Everywhere to find search demand, while analyzing the first page of Google for your target keyword to find untapped opportunities.

I take this a step further in my coaching community by teaching my students how to find low-competition opportunities within specific niches. Instead of researching the competition for plumbing across different cities, look at one service within the plumbing niche. For example, water treatment system installation.

Going after sub-niches is how I’ve been able to grow my own rank and rent business considerably this last year. Here are some of my top-performing sites. As you can see, a commercial concrete site and an electric gates website are currently among the leaders.

There are countless low-competition opportunities like this when targeting sub-niches because of how Google’s algorithm works. Google analyzes topical density. If a website targets many services within a niche, like many company websites do, it can struggle to rank well for any individual service. With rank and rent, you can hyper-target websites to just one service. This increases the topical density for that one service and increases the likelihood the website will rank on Google.

AI automation is one of the most saturated online business models

AI automation agencies are one of the most commonly promoted online business models right now, leading to a highly competitive landscape for clients. This is especially true for local service businesses. There are many online business influencers like Jason Wardrop creating free courses around AI automation with GoHighLevel. GoHighLevel is an automation software that offers a generous affiliate program, making it lucrative to create content that teaches others how to use the software to automate processes for local business owners. This has led to a massive influx of AI automation agencies in the market competing for low-ticket retainers.

This has been going on for a few years already, so many business owners have already been burned by AI automation agencies that couldn’t deliver. The common sentiment across business owner communities on Reddit is that AI automation agencies are often a scam.

Sales difficulty

Rank and rent websites offer low-friction sales opportunities

Rank and rent websites are often easy to sell because you can let prospective clients sample your leads and start them on a risk-free commission deal. With rank and rent, you do the hard work of ranking website assets before you pitch prospective clients. That way, when you approach business owners, you already have leads that you can let them trial for a short period. Then you can make the close even easier by offering to start them on a performance-based deal where they just pay you a percentage of the earnings that your leads generate for them. 5-10% of gross revenue is a common range across most industries.

In my experience, it’s much easier to close clients once they’ve already received a benefit from your service. The way I do this in my business is add a whisper message that a prospective client hears when I forward them a lead. They hear, “this lead came from Ippei”. By the time I reach out to them after I’ve sent them a few leads, they are eager to speak with me. On top of that, I start all of my rank and rent clients on commission deals, many of which I keep on commission deals long-term because I target high-ticket niches. For example, my client recently paid me $2,250 for one flooring lead because the project was worth $35,192 and we have a 15% commission deal on their gross profit. Gross profit was $15,000 here.

AI automation retainers can be hard to justify

AI automation often doesn’t have a measurable impact on business performance. Many AI automation services focus on non-essential aspects like saving business owners time or making certain processes more efficient. While this can be beneficial to a business, if there isn’t a clear increase in revenue or decrease in costs without sacrificing revenue, many business owners will find it difficult to justify the monthly expense.

Check out this Reddit thread that highlights this issue. When asked why it seems so many AI automation agencies are closing down, one Reddit user mentions that the ROI often isn’t worth it for business owners.

In my opinion, the lack of direct impact on revenue makes AI automation extremely difficult to sell. Even worse, you’re competing against thousands of agencies trying to sell these same services and contacting businesses through cold email and cold calling to make the pitch. Local businesses are getting inundated with AI automation pitches, making it nearly impossible to even get to the stage of making your pitch.

Outsourcing Likelihood

Service businesses are likely to outsource lead generation to rank and rent websites

Rank and rent websites always add a revenue boost to a business so there is little reason to reject a rank and rent partnership. Even if a business already pays for an in-house marketing team, they are often open to further opportunities, especially when structured as commission deals. The average B2C home service business spends around 7.2% of their revenue on marketing, according to The CMO Survey by Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, Deloitte, and the American Marketing Association. That means paying a 7% commission to a rank and rent website for leads is usually more efficient than their own marketing efforts anyway.

Furthermore, many local service businesses already pay for marketing and lead generation in one form or another. A 2025 survey of 500 SMBs in the United States found that the majority 52% of small businesses outsource some aspect of their marketing. Many of these businesses pay for leads directly. The 2026 Jobber Home Services Trend Report that surveyed 1,050 companies across the United States and Canada found that 16% of service businesses pay for leads through lead generation sites like Angi’s and Thumbtack. The thing is, these commercial lead generation sites charge service businesses even if they don’t land the job. They also sell the same lead to multiple businesses to compete for it. As such, rank and rent partnerships where leads are exclusively sent to them are a better deal than the commercial lead generation sites.

Here is one of my new students that just got their first lead after 3 weeks of launching a new rank and rent website. Of course their prospective client was happy to take the lead because it provides immediate value to their business. Proving this value upfront is the first step to closing these deals, which is why this model is especially effective for beginners without testimonials and case studies.

Many small businesses opt to build AI automations in-house

Rather than paying hundreds to thousands of dollars a month ongoing, many business owners build the simple automations they need themselves or hire someone for a one-time build. The barrier to entry for learning AI automation isn’t that high because there are many no-code tools like Make and Zapier. Business owners have the added benefit of knowing exactly which tools they use and need to connect and how their business functions to custom tailor an AI automation solution to their own needs more efficiently than a third-party agency.

Here’s a Reddit comment from a manufacturing business owner that says he uses n8n to automate his business operations.

In response to a question about why AI automation agencies are quietly closing down, one Reddit user mentions that the growing awareness of AI agents might be a contributing factor. That’s true. Mainstream tools like ChatGPT have extended their functionality to make setting up AI automations easier and more accessible than ever before.

Client profile

Rank and rent businesses work with clients that have a growth mindset

Rank and rent clients tend to be business owners with a mindset of abundance and growth. These are people that are looking to expand their business operations and make more money. I believe these are the best kinds of people to do business with if your goal is to make money. Surrounding yourself with people on the same mission as you, whether that’s in a community or the clients you work with, is one of the best ways to level up.

This is why one of the most effective strategies I teach my students to grow their rank and rent business is to not always look for new clients, but to look for ways to add more value for existing clients. You do this by building more rank and rent assets for clients that are already paying you to generate more leads for them.

I’ve used this strategy myself with a handful of my top clients to great success. For example, one of my clients is a general contractor that performs a broad range of home services across Los Angeles. I have a portfolio of websites generating hundreds of leads per month for this one client that translates to tens of thousands of dollars in commissions. Here are some of the recent commissions they’ve paid me.

AI automation agencies attract cost-conscious clients

AI automation agencies often work with operationally conservative businesses because their solutions often focus on saving time or money. Although these aren’t bad clients, the buying mindset is different. Rather than paying for increased revenue, they are often paying for reduced cost.

In my experience, clients focused on growth are generally easier to expand with because there is no fixed ceiling on how much additional revenue they want. But with cost-saving services like AI automation, once you’ve automated the biggest savings, there can be fewer obvious ways to continue increasing how much the client spends with you.

Client churn

Rank and rent websites prevent clients from churning easily

With rank and rent, you always own the asset that generates the leads so a business can’t fire you without losing that lead flow. As such, rank and rent clients often stick long-term and have a substantial customer lifetime value (CLV).

For example, I’ve had a tree service rank and rent client in Michigan paying me $2,000 a month for over a decade already. That’s $240,000+ lifetime earnings from a website I’ve barely touched over the years.

In my opinion, it’s better to build assets that you own and can generate you passive income long-term rather than working on a retainer where clients can easily fire you at any time.

AI automation clients can churn with minimal consequences

Companies paying for AI automation services can often cancel without any major negative effects on their business operations. In many cases, there isn’t any recurring income to begin with because the setup all happens on the infrastructure that the client owns.

In answering the question why so many AI automation agencies disappear after a few months, one Reddit user says they believe it’s because you can charge $2,000 for an AI automation setup but start each month from $0. An AI automation agency owner they knew doing this model without an ongoing monthly retainer had signed 6 clients but felt they were on a treadmill selling rather than building a business.

Even if you do the monthly retainer model, you need to continue proving your value month after month to prevent clients from canceling. If your AI automations are built to save time and cut costs, you will be one of the first costs that a business owner cuts during a rough patch. The only way to keep clients long-term is by adding value to a business. That means you should focus on creating AI automations that generate more revenue for the business. At that point, you’re operating an AI automation agency that focuses on lead generation or product sales.
