Product Research Tools

Here's a list of tools that are helpful for product research.

  • Seller App: adapts any seller into an expert researcher with easy to use features and lightning fast shortcuts.
  • AMZTracker: The way this tool works is you select a BestSeller Category, hit "Enter," and it drops you 3 key pieces of information: Estimated Sales, Number of Reviews, and how many people are selling that item.
  • AMZ.ONE: This is a copy-cat tool, identical to AMZTracker.
  • Jungle Scout: Offers competitor monitoring, sales projects and resources for big data analysis.
  • FBA Wizard Pro: Locate home-run products on both Amazon and Ebay.
  • Keyword Tool: Their software utilizes the autosuggestions on Aamzon
  • AMZScout: Comparable to JS as they have a web app and chrome extension that offer: product potential score, BSR, monthly sales current inventory levels, profit, and more.
  • AMZBase: Free Tool! Easily get the ASIN and Title description of product listings on Bezo's platform. Also calculates Amazon's multiplicity of fees.
  • Keepa: Up-to-Date price tracking helper. Gives you beginning to end price history information, browser extensions, and most importantly a gigantic, product database that is always current.
  • CamelCamelCamel: Price Tracking Tool that will give you the peace of mind that the best deals are yours.
  • Helium10: A suite of seller tools that includes keyword research, trend identifier, listing optimizer and the ability to creep on your competitors.
  • Sonar: No, not the ding-ding that a submarine makes, but a tool that offers ASIN Look-Up, keyword research help, and a huge record of common, actual Amazon search terms.
  • Bool: This tool is unique in that it gathers the number of reviews as well as show you how the BSR changed in the recent past.
  • Sellics: One of the benefits of Sellics is that you can see the top 500 Best Sellers, when Amazon will only show you to the top 100.
  • Keyword Tool Dominator (KTD): When you are looking to list a specific kind of fork on Amazon, this tool is helpful, because it will give you all the specific types of forks. This tool takes seed keywords and shows you all the branching keywords as it uses data from the Amazon search bar's autocomplete feature.
  • Keyword Inspector: Using the Trends feature, you can get all a ton of product ideas.
  • Amazeowl: The differentiating factor of this tool is that it is built as an app that you need to download onto your computer. Security features I had to disable made it a little sketchy, but it gave was almost as good as Jungle Scout.
  • Trendosaur: Like to flip products on Amazon? This tool does a great job at finding the great in-the-moment deals. Doing Private Label? You could also use this tool to get more inspiration for your product selection.
  • Marketscout: Put together by EcomEngine, this internet-driven tool gives you loads of data that you can download into a full-fledged report.
  • Unicorn Smasher: Built by AMZ Tracker and offers sales estimates, all-around data and, best of all, it's free.

Rank Tracking Tools

Here's some input on the best rank tracker from Quora:

  • AMZTracker: this tool is handy because you can see all your products ranking status in a single glance. It's like the Google Analytics for Amazon.
  • Data Hawk: This tool tracks everything! Keyword ranks, product tracker as well as offers further analysis into applicable keywords.
  • Ranktracer: In addition to tracing the progress on sale and normal prices, a bonus of this tool is that it shows hourly Amazon coupons.
  • ASINHUNT: An internet grounded tool, this tool does one job superwell: it provides timely estimates of the daily sales volume when the ASIN of a product is entered.
  • SellerPrime: This multi-tool is like a Swiss Army knife for Amazon Sellers, offering optimization for your product listing as well as ongoing pricing suggestions, keyword analysis, and ppc campaign adjustments.
  • Kibly: This tracker shows you the BSR of every product you list on Amazon from the day you enroll in it. A bonus feature is that it shows your average ranking to keep you motivated to keep raising the score.
  • Amzshark: The part I like best about this tool is its simplicity. Just plug in the ASIN and its starts tracking your item's daily search ranking. In addition to tracking your listed products, you can plug in keywords and phrases and it will track their ranking as well.
  • Zonguru: From the founders of Zonjump, this tool tracks your listings' BSRs via their ASINs. It shows where you rank in four categories, the main one, as well as
  • Overgrowth: Offering pricing rated on how many words you are tracking, this tool is rather pricey, but it does take in a lot of data, logging the placement of 150 words every day for 79 dollars a month.
  • AMZWordspy: One of the newest tools on the market, this tool still has few bugs being worked out, but it's pretty inexpensive running at 10 dollars a month for the basic level and 20 dollar per month for the pro version.
  • BlackBird: If you want to avoid the hassle of having to plug in all your products ASINs, this tool automatically grabs them when you login to your Amazon Seller Account. Automation comes at a price, starting at 97 dollars a month, with an advanced $147 level.
  • FBAToolkit: This tool looks like the grandfather to Jungle Scout, using antiquated excel sheets to display the data, but if you like the rustic feel, it could be for you.
  • Helium 10: The product tracker in this tool suite is the most up-to-date I've seen. It tracks hourly rank performance so when you are running specials, you can stay current with your campaigns. This tool also tracks the position of your PPC ads to check their effectivity.
  • Sellics: Interested in tracking the changes you or your VA's make to your listings? This software gives you that ability to record each time you adapt your item's photos or turned on your PPC advertising, etc.
  • Helloprofit: This tool is pretty average, doing tracking product listing ranking and some keywords, but a little pricey at 97 dollars a month. But one bonus is that it does reveal which categories you are ranking in. (Products can be in multiple sub-categories, but only one main category.
  • Scope: One of the tools inside SellerLabs, this tool tracks changes in reviews, price, sales and BSR for only $32.50 a month, just under $400 per year for the basic, or $57.50 per month for the pro version ($690/year).
Pro Tip:
When picking out tools, I've found it helpful to open a couple trials at the same time and directly compare the capabilities of each one in order to find the creme de la crem (best of the bunch).

Profit Calculator Tools

  • Sellics: Their tool offers so much more than the FBA Calculator that Amazon provides, showing breakdowns of taxes, FBA fees, Amazon Fees, PPC Costs, the value of different promotions, what you paid for shipping and your COGS (cost of goods sold). You can get a 14 day free trial here.
  • TerapeakMostly set up to be used on Ebay, but it appeals that they are adapting their platform to operate on Amazon as well. You can still use the tool to get product ideas, but overall, it is not very helpful for the data-driven nature of Amazon as of December 17, 2019.
  • Seller Legend: If you are into setting up automation, this tool could be for you. It offers the ability for you to establish automatic procedures for reporting activities. (i.e. automatically generate you a report of xyz listings every other Tuesday)
  • Quantify: A tool built by Seller Labs, offers pricing from 29 to 299/month, depending on how many orders you are doing via FBA. A unique feature of this tool is its invenotry tracking feature which will aleart you when inventory gets low.
  • Fetcher: This company offers a free calulator in exchange for your email address.
  • The Selling FamilyHere's a how-to article on the Amazon Made FBA Calculator
  • ShopKeeper: With pricing pro-rated on how many sales your Amazon biz is doing (starts at $20/month), this tool is great for just getting started and the calculator includes 72 different fees and promos.
  • SkuBana: This company didn't make their own tool just wrote about the free one that Aamzon built for FBA-ers
  • BQool: This one is a basic calculator that hasn't been updated since 2016.
  • Amazon Revenue Calculator: Designed by Amazon itself, this program is made specially for those who sell FBA and it's free.
  • Jungle Scout: The popular Amazon chrome extension offers a free calculator after you opt-in to their email list.
  • AMZscout: Built as a free chrome extension, this tool is free value in advance, as this company offers FBA courses as well.
  • Feedvisor: In addition to the standard calculating features, this one offers nation-based calculations. A little bonus of this one is that it includes a how-to-use video.
  • tool4seller: This calculator is a simple one that looks up the various FBA fees, compares air/ship methods and estimates future sales profit. Nice and new, this one was updated recently at the beginning of 2019. But it's free, so you can get your numbers at no cost.
  • thesellingfamily: This is a basic plug-and-play calculator that is free.
  • Helium10: Another benefit of this tool suite is the built-in calculator that provides tons of information, but what really makes this tool stand apart from the rest is it estimates the Net Fees for selling your item in Jan-Sept and the Net Fees for selling the item in Oct-December.
  • AMZpecty: The Unique feature of this calculator is it has 2 types of calculating programs: a Bulk Profit Calculator & an Individual Profit Calculator. These two are structured as chrome extensions.
  • Algopix: This tool is helpful because you can add multiple shipping locations and get them in the same quote. Nice tool to have when you are selling in multiple markets
  • AMZseller.CLUB: This resource has two calculators on theirs site: the FBA Fee Calculator and the Profit Calculator. Both are free.
  • Analyzer.Tools: This software offers both bulk analysis and profit calculations with customizations for both FBA and FBM sellers.

Compare and contrast PPC with SEO

Optimizing your PPC is essential for the profitability of your business.

It's not free traffic generated by the quality of your listing's content

Here's some helpful insight from Reddit: (tap/click on the image to go to the source)

  • Optmyzer: This tool is an all around ppc optimization assistant, able to get your Google Ad Campaigns and Amazon PPC campaigns to the best that they can be. Amazon Keyword Tools

  • KeyworX:
  • Amazon Keyword Tool:
  • Keywords Everywhere:
  • Amazon Autocomplete: This isn't a tool external to Amazon, rather it is copying the words that Amazon suggests to you while you are typing a query into the search bar on Amazon.com.
  • Keyword Tool Dominator: The task that this tool advertises that it does best is "discover long-tail keywords your target audience is searching for." If you are relatively new to Amazon FBA, you might not be aware of the long-term impact of "long-tail" keywords. Long-Tail keywords have a lot of potential to increase your organic (non-paid traffic) sales, as the multiple-term keywords can bring up your listing, if you optimize your product listing correctly.
  • Google Keyword Planner: This is a free tool offered by Google. The beauty of this tool is that rather than using 3rd party data like a lot of other paid tools, the information that comes directly from the biggest search engine on the planet.
  • Ubersuggest: This tool is free to use, and similar to Google's Keyword Planner, you can see how many searches have been made for the keyword term, the average cost-per-click, as well as the organic ranking difficulty and the paid search difficulty.
  • Viral Launch: This Tool Suite includes a keyword research tool. Their key term tool offers you the ability to find collections of relevant search term as well as a number of useful metrics that can assist you in selecting which ones to include in your listing's composition.
  • Helium 10: This is another popular Amazon Tool Box with a keyword research tool included inside. Named "Magnet 2," as it is the 2nd version of their search term utility, lives up to its name, as it is quite likely the most powerful Amazon FBA keyword tool as of February 13, 2020. One of the most helpful features is it offers a keyword density analysis feature which is named "Word Frequency."
  • Ahrefs: One of the most thorough tools when it comes to keyword research, both on Google and Amazon. It is very simple and easy to use, as there's only 3 steps to use: 1) enter your keywords, 2) select "Amazon" at the top white bar (between "Youtube" and "Bing"), and 3) press "Enter"
  • Sonar: Sonar is a tool from the Sellics tool suite, and it's equal in its ease of use as Ahrefs, and gives you the ability to search products by their ASINs in addition to their keywords.
  • Scope by Seller Labs: This tool is not for beginners looking to save a dime as there's no free trial, and the minimal investment starts at 390 dollars (USD).

Final Thoughts (Should You Start FBA?)

I have two final thoughts for you today:

1. A One of a Kind Course

If you are set on building an FBA business, this is the course I recommend.

Here's why:

Sophie Howard has real Amazon experience and has shown her business acuity by creating a multiple 7 figure business as well as selling one of her brands for nearly a million dollars.

It is the farthest thing from a scam or get-rich-quick scheme, because Sophie literally shares what she is doing in her business as she is helping course members along their journey.

And she explains up front that starting an Amazon Private Label business is not for the faint of heart, but takes consistent action and a relentless focus on what you are creating. .

The course itself contains her branding strategies with wisdom that stands the test of time.

She is from New Zealand, but sells products in multiple Amazon Markets, including the United States, which is still the largest market by far

The reason I bought the Blue Sky Amazon courses was because I watched an interview of Sophie speaking on her process and I was intrigued since I was scaling my Amazon business quite aggressively at the time (2017).

2. The Up-Front Capital You Need to Get Started on Amazon

In order to really get started well on Amazon, many claim that you can get started with a few thousand dollars or less. I would increase that further to at least 15,000 dollars, because once you have bought the course for 2.5k, then you only have 12.5k left for your business expenses, which, in reality, is quite a tight budget when you take into account the number of products you might have to test to find one that sells well.

For example, Sophie has launched over 500 items.

blue sky amazon course creator sophie howard launched 500 different products on amazon

Do you think all of them are best sellers?

No way!

While that would be ideal, does life turn out that way?

Hell no!

The reality is more grim:

Some of them sell more than others, while some don't sell at all.

So what Sophie, myself, and other success private label sellers have done is discover winning products by testing the waters of the Amazon ocean.

We put the money and time into putting up listings for multiple different products at the same time and sift out the duds from the homerun products.

If I wouldn't have had my former success in lead generation, I wouldn't be able to afford the high cost of this important experimentation.

A Better Online Option

In my experience, I've found local lead generation to be easier and more profitable than Amazon FBA.

With FBA, my average profit margin is about 25%, while with my lead gen business, my average profit margin is around 80%.

The difference of this profit margin can be explained by comparing ongoing expenses:

My ongoing expenses with my lead generation are very small because the value created are phone calls and forms emailed.

Whereas my FBA ongoing costs, while stable for the most part, are much higher, since the value created is in the form of physical items that are made in Asia and then transported thousands of miles to Amazon's warehouse, where they are shipped to my customers in the United States by Amazon for an additional cost.

Below is one of my lead gen sites that costs me $50 dollars a month to maintain, but brings in 2,000 dollars a month in income. That's a 97% profit margin!

Why I believe local lead gen is better than Amazon FBA

  • It doesn't have near the ongoing costs as Amazon FBA and it consistently pays, month after month and will continue to do so as long as business owners need customers (ie. forever).
  • Honestly, it’s a lot less hassle. You do not deal with a myriad of professionals, from manufacturers to shippers, and freight forwarders to regulating companies. Instead you deal with a group of clients that you select. (Yes, YOU get to pick your clients).
  • Because it’s solely on the internet, your overhead costs are low and you’re looking at much larger profit margins than any other online business model out there.
  • No more buying ads because you get FREE organic traffic from Google.
  • There’s not a chance of market saturation because new businesses are started by the thousands each year.
