Who Is Shawn Josiah?

Shawn Josiah is an affiliate marketer and coach from Singapore. But, he studied Business in King’s College London in London, England. After graduating, he worked in the government but realized he’s earning the same no matter how many hours he put in. So Shawn started learning about affiliate marketing as a side-hustle.

In one of his videos, he said he started teaching when his friends asked how he quit and still lives lavishly. He introduced them to affiliate marketing, and now his friends are earning 7-figures. Shawn Josiah Claim:

Shawn Josiah claims you can attain income stability and predictable ROI with just 1 hour a day. According to him, you’ll be able to set up a faceless affiliate marketing business in just 90 days. After that, you’ll only need 1 hour every day to run the business and take home the profit.

Shawn Josiah Claims Debunked:

  • Trust is a factor in purchase decisions. According to Insider Intelligence, only 26% of people are inclined to buy a product promoted by a trusted influencer. That percentage goes down the more vague you are, as people think you’re untrustworthy. You have to build a market, and get that market to trust you to earn commissions.
  • Affiliate marketing’s income depends on content. You should have compelling and valuable content to move people into buying, especially in doing email campaigns. For instance, 56% of people unsubscribe to email lists when the content is not relevant. And your open rate depends on your subject line. Barilliance’s study revealed 64% of people decide to open an email based on its subject line. A boring or misleading subject line will cause opting out of your email list.
  • It requires constant maintenance. Affiliate marketing needs consistent content to rank or remain relevant to the algorithm. However, if you’re using email marketing, you need to find the right balance in email frequency. Another challenge with an email list is staying profitable while not draining it out. A Constant Contact survey showed 69% of people unsubscribe because of too many emails. Your income in commission via affiliate marketing depends on your list health.
  • According to redditors, it’s important to have a plan for your email campaigns. Hubspot reported 65% of marketers increase open rate by segmenting their emails. This means you need to segment your list by:
  • demographic,
  • interest,
  • engagement, and
  • where they are on the customer journey.

How Profitable Is Affiliate Marketing?

The average affiliate earning $96,456 per annum shows how profitable affiliate marketing is. According to Influencer Marketing Hub, it can go as high as $150,000 as reported by 15% of affiliates. That said, more than half (57.55%) of affiliate marketers earn less than $10,000 per year. It means the majority of affiliate marketers are below the US poverty line of $15,060, as per the US Census Bureau. Affiliate marketing has a wide profit range.

Why Affiliate Marketing Is Booming in 21st Century?

Affiliate marketing is booming in the 21st century because it is cost-effective and the rise of social media platforms. 65% of online business owners said it contributes to 20% of their annual earnings, as per Statista. Authority Hacker also revealed for every $1 spent, affiliate marketing earns $15. Affiliate marketing has a positive ROI for businesses. They also only need to pay commissions to affiliates if the sales are made.

Social media use is also a factor in this affiliate marketing boom. Affiliate marketers can build a following and recommend products to their audience. In fact, Rakuten Marketing stated 8 out of 10 affiliates use social media. Also, there are other marketing channels, like Shawn Josiah’s email campaigns. It also lets affiliates tap into a global market. As per We Can Track, 90% of affiliate networks are global, and 30% of revenue is from cross-border ecommerce.

Why Affiliate Marketing is So Hard?

  • Affiliate marketers don’t own the platform. They join affiliate networks which connect them to brands around the world. It is convenient since they can browse through the network for products they want to promote. However, that also means they have to work within the confines of the network. Amazon’s cookie duration is only 24 hours. It means people should buy through your affiliate link within 24 hours, or you don’t get the commission. And every affiliate network has different cookie duration and other regulations. A Reddit user cautioned beginners there might be changes without notice. For example, changes in required balance for payout, or the offer is removed from the platform.
  • Adapting to market demand. According to Forbes, 7 out of 10 consumers engage with personalized messaging only. And McKinsey reported 86% of people get frustrated when the message is not personalized. It adds another challenge for affiliate marketers, especially if you do email campaigns. It means people are constantly expecting valuable content relevant to their interests.
  • Challenging to generate traffic. In a survey, Authority Hacker found 45.3% of affiliate marketers’ biggest struggle is generating traffic. Paid traffic is costly since they’re bidding for space. Gen3 Marketing reported 62% of marketers plan to increase their budget in the next year. Meanwhile, organic traffic takes time. Industry experts like Greg Gottfried and Zac Johnson said organic traffic needs consistent effort to take effect.

Local Lead Generation Is More Passive Online Business Than Affiliate Marketing

Local lead generation is more passive than affiliate marketing because it is low maintenance. Affiliate marketing’s biggest challenge is you don’t own the platform, and the customers. You have to always keep your eye out for any affiliate network changes, and for your new customers. You have to adapt to shifting customer trends. It can mean establishing a brand new account on a new platform that people are switching into.

But with local lead generation, you own the website. With $500, you can set up a niche website that you can rent to local business owners.  And once your local lead gen sites are ranking, the income becomes passive. According to Google, 90% of consumers search online for local information. And WebFX reported 8 out of 10 local searches convert into sale. You’re providing business owners with quality leads, so they’ll be happy to pay the fee monthly.

conclusion-affiliate-marketing

Moreover, local lead generation has a shorter sales cycle. Hubspot reported 28% of local searches convert to sales within 24 hours. Whereas affiliate marketing’s commission is tied to affiliate network’s cookie window. This is why local lead generation is still my top recommendation for a business venture in 2024.
